6 Steps to Teach Food Safety to Your Homeschooler

Dec 24, 2025

Recently, David and I spoke to AJ Richards, who is the owner of From the Farm. From the Farm is an e-commerce, digital market where customers can source healthier foods and meat from local farmers and sellers. From the Farm connects customers with farmers and ranchers directly. The sellers manage their own stores, and customers can have their purchases delivered or arrange to pick up. In addition, Mr. Richards is also a husband and father to three daughters. His oldest daughter graduated, and now he and his wife homeschool their younger daughters.

In order to raise knowledgeable adults, Mr. Richards advised that children need to learn about the food process in America.

  • Eat red meat and show your homeschoolers how to source it.
  • Learn about the food process through at-home cooking.
  • Show your homeschooler how to prepare leftovers and freeze/can extra food.
  • Encourage your homeschooler to take care of their body.
  • Ask questions about your food.
  • Take responsibility.

Food Safety 101

First off, Mr. Richards explained that healthy soil leads to healthy forage, which leads to a healthy animal. The healthy meat of that animal then leads to a healthy human being. Therefore, eat red meat and show your homeschooler how to source healthy foods.

Also, show them how to use simple ingredients to create delicious meals at home. In addition, show your homeschooler how to prepare leftovers, using these sourced meals. Involve your homeschooler in the process of freezing and canning food, so they can learn about the entire food process.

Next, encourage your homeschooler to take care of their body through eating good food and engaging in physical activity. Workout together, go on walks, or swim at the local pool. You set the example, so be sure to show them that you exercise and take care of your body.

Finally, ask questions about your food and take responsibility for your family. Source good food and encourage family exercise. Protect your family from unhealthy ingredients and cut out ingredients that make you feel bad. Don’t be afraid to ask questions about ingredients or if your food is treated with chemicals.

Conclusion

In conclusion, you must care for your family by sourcing good meat, vegetables, and other food. Encourage your family to take care of their health. Also, remember that you set the example. You can lead as the homeschool parent. Show your kids a healthy way to live.
