6 Steps to Creating a Healthy Homeschool Family
Jan 07, 2026Do you want to work out as a homeschool parent, but feel unmotivated or unsure of how to start? David and I recently interviewed a homeschool mom and fitness influencer. We interviewed Mykala Smith, who shares her passion for fitness on Instagram @fitmominthegarage. She currently homeschools her three boys and focuses on expanding her brand. Right now, she’s developing a healthy lifestyle curriculum for kids called Play Fit, which will teach kids the fundamentals of fitness while also feeling like they’re at play.
For parents who want to create a healthy lifestyle at home, she shared several tips.
- Workout with your kids.
- Working out will help you become a better mom.
- Working out makes you physically stronger.
- No good hack overcomes discipline.
- Find a community.
- It needs to hurt bad enough…
Get to it and Develop Grit
Involve your kids in the workout process. Make it simple so you can get a workout in and show your kids the importance of working out together. You can also go on hikes, walks, or bike rides to create fun family activities.
Ms. Smith explained that working out makes you feel better both mentally and physically. It will help you create a better emotional environment at home and help you keep up with your kids.
You must use discipline. Look at your goals and your family. Do you want to feel better? Do you want to become stronger? Do you want to teach healthy values to your family? Ask yourself these questions and get started.
Find a community to spur you on. Find other people to work out with. Build a community of people who will help you remain positive and reach your goals.
If it hurts badly enough, you will make a change. Do you feel unwell or weak? Do you want your kids to become more agile and strong? According to Ms. Smith, it needs to hurt badly enough for you to change.
Conclusion
Use motivation and goal-setting to get started. Think of your family and start those goals. Find determination and grit and use them to push you forward.
All you need to ask yourself is “Do I want my family to feel better?” “Do I want my family to have healthy values?” If the answer is yes, start today!
