5 Steps to Creating Wise Homeschool Communicators
Feb 27, 2026Recently, I sat down with Shep Hyken, a customer service and communication expert. Mr. Hyken helps his clients have superb experiences for their customers and employees. He explained that the internal customer experience is just as important as the customer’s experience. He mainly works with companies, industry events, and associations. See the links below to learn more about Mr. Hyken’s work.
In this interview, we discussed vital habits for homeschool parents and their homeschoolers. These tips can cultivate strong communication and leadership traits within a person.
- Teach your children how to do the right thing.
- Seek feedback and constructive criticism.
- Set the correct tone as the parent.
- Ask extra questions.
- Learn how identify cultures around you, especially in the workplace.
How to Lead with Intention and Morality
First, teach your children how to do the right thing. Teach them how to make a moral, just decision. Encourage them to make the good choice, even when it’s hard. This lesson will serve them well in life and teach them how to uphold standards of morality and goodness.
Next, seek feedback and constructive criticism. Learn how to take other opinions. Mr. Hyken suggests filtering yourself to your inner thoughts around criticism. Work on learning from feedback and moving forward. Although this is difficult, it will show your children how to learn from failure and move forward.
Continuing, set the correct tone as the parent. This includes setting standards of morality within the home. Do you need to teach your children how to communicate well? How to be punctual and respectful of other people’s time? Do they need to listen more than speak to others? Discuss these ideas with your spouse. Also, treat your child with love and care. This is a vital piece to setting a good tone within the home.
In addition, ask extra questions. Teach your kiddos how to do the same. Motivate your kids to become intentional conversationalists. Show them communicating with love and care can make the world a better place…one conversation at a time.
Finally, learn how to identify cultures around you, or “read the room”. This skill will serve you and your homeschoolers in life. It will create strong thinkers as your kids enter the workforce and build relationships. With this critical thinking skill, your children will be ahead in life.
Conclusion
In conclusion, Mr. Hyken’s tips will create intentional communicators in both you and your kiddos. These skills create well-rounded human beings and motivated professionals. Especially these days, these skills are like gold treasures. They will also benefit your family as you grow together in intentional conversation and critical thinking methods.
