5 Steps to Build a Good Relationship with Your Teen

Feb 11, 2026

Recently, David and I sat down with Loree Bischoff, who is a master life coach, holistic health coach, and co-creator of the Teen Life Coaching (TLC) course. We thoroughly discussed her Teen Life Coaching program throughout the interview. This conversation was immensely fruitful, and I wanted to share some important takeaways from the interview. Loree discussed several ways that we can help our teens perform well in life.

  • Encourage your teens to go through the TLC course.
    • It’s like having a personal coach in their corner.
  • Demonstrate healthy living.
    • What you do has more influence than what you say.
  • Focus on healthy habits.
    • Make them your non-negotiable lifestyle.
  • Build communication skills.
    • A critical skill for every personal and professional relationship throughout life.
  • Regulate emotions.
    • Develop high-level emotional fitness.

How to Develop Healthy Habits Alongside Your Teen

First, use the TLC course to help your teens. Let them achieve independence, agency, and self-growth as they work through the course on their own. The course explores various important themes, including confidence, communication, developing character traits and a personal constitution, and achieving health goals. It teaches young people how to take command and develop emotional fitness in their lives.

Next, demonstrate healthy living as a parent. Show your teen how you work on building healthy habits yourself. You can install screentime boundaries for yourself, build a workout routine, or listen to knowledge-inducing podcasts. You can also communicate lovingly and effectively with your spouse. These habits demonstrate healthy habits to your teen.

Continuing, focus on healthy habits, such as eating well and exercising often. Whether you eat more salads, intake more protein, or go for walks 3x per week, this shows that you pursue your health. Show your teen how to pursue their own health walk and workout together! Loree encourages working out together and pursuing health goals as a family.

Also, build communication skills with your teen. Help them learn to make good eye contact, shake hands, and use mannerly comments. Encourage them to compliment others and use boundaries when needed. You could practice communication examples at the kitchen table as a family exercise. Also, implementation is key! Implement effective and kind communication as a parent. They will note your habits and see how to communicate well.

Finally, regulate your emotions as a parent. Try not to snap or get immediately angry. Communicate with love and care. Be honest when needed. Take deep breaths when you feel overwhelmed. These habits can instill peace within your home and show your teen how to become a regulated adult.

Conclusion

In conclusion, take these steps and implement them as a parent of teens. You will demonstrate great habits to your teenager. Also, discuss these habits openly with your teenager and explain when you struggle with these steps. Open communication will do wonders for your relationship with your teen. These tips and practices will help your teen perform well in life!
