5 Healthy Habits to Transform Your Homeschool Household

Apr 06, 2026

Keeping up with a healthy lifestyle can be difficult when you’re already a homeschool mom. You have to stay on top of chores, schoolwork, activities, and more. How can you navigate healthy living as well?

Recently, Coral and I spoke with Dr. Carly and Dr. Rachel, who are both moms and holistic health advocates. They met in medical school and eventually founded Kale Blossom, a health brand that supports women's and mothers’ health. In fact, they started an app called Nook to help families navigate low-tox living. They both were frustrated by the lack of options and support for women in the medical field. They saw little focus on identifying the root causes of health issues. In addition, both doctors grew up in households where home-cooked meals and healthy living were prominent.

  • Focus on the core foundations of health.
  • Model good habits for your children.
  • Start with dietary changes.
  • Help your picky eater.
  • Make gradual swaps.

Be the Change

First of all, focus on the core foundations of health. This can help you step up and care for yourself as a busy homeschool parent. Get enough sleep. Drink the proper amount of water for your body. Eat clean foods and keep fresh/frozen fruits and veggies on hand. Take care of your stress levels and exercise regularly. Also, try to get fresh air frequently. Connect with your community and socialize regularly. It’s important to connect with your “people.” This can benefit your health, too.

Next, model good habits for your children. Show them how you take care of your body. They, in turn, will pick up these habits. Also, cook together and invite them into the kitchen to meal prep. Teach them how to scan and read ingredient labels.

On the same subject, Dr. Carly recommended starting with your dietary needs before you change other health habits. Start by eating clean foods and learning what brands are reputable. Research and find the trustworthy brands. Back up your research with action. Read labels to check for healthy or unhealthy ingredients. As a final check, see if the brand has sold out to a large corporation.

Continuing, help your picky eater with food options. The doctors recommend repeating food exposure if your child doesn’t like it. A child may need exposure up to 12 times before the parent knows if they truly dislike the food. Also, ensure they aren’t suffering from nutrient deficiencies that affect taste. The doctors suggest incorporating a multivitamin powder to help (see link below for a multivitamin powder).  Finally, add color to their plate by using colorful foods. You can incorporate beets, tomatoes, green beans, or blueberries to add color to their meals.

To take off some pressure, make gradual swaps. Once you run out of a product or food item you need to replace, swap it out for a healthier choice. The doctors recommend using Pinterest to find DIY items, such as a vinegar glass cleaner. You can also change your meat source to a grass-fed butcher or buy whole-grain bread instead of white bread.

Conclusion

In conclusion, both doctors provided excellent information regarding healthy living. These habits can help families support their health and follow a lifelong health journey. In addition, as you demonstrate these practices, your homeschoolers will learn them. Not only will these habits serve them well as children, but they will also help them grow into successful, health-focused adults.
