4 Ways to Build Your Homeschooler’s Curiosity

How do we cultivate naturally curious children? In a world where AI thinks for the younger generations and cuts back on brain use, how do we help our children remain curious? Well, as homeschooling families, we know homeschooling encourages our children to be curious. So, where do we start?

• Let them pursue their interests.
• Encourage questions and discussions. 
• Read together. 
• Use unit studies.

Cultivate Curiosity and Appreciation

Let your homeschoolers pursue their own interests. If they love intercultural communication or farming, encourage them in their interests. Encourage them to deep dive into their favorite topics. While spending time at the library, you can look for books together on their beloved subjects. 

Next, encourage them to ask you questions and create discussions. Be open to talking about their interests and embrace their curiosity. If they ask you a question you can’t answer, find someone who can. This will make your homeschooler feel appreciated and valued.

Also, read about their interests together. Spend time together reading and talking about the things you learn. You will grow in your knowledge and relationship with your homeschooler. Together, you can build curiosity!

Finally, use unit studies to incorporate your homeschooler’s interests into your daily lessons. Find ways to conjoin their favorite interests with core subjects. Again, your homeschooler will feel loved and valued.

With your child’s interests, you can use these practices to help them feel appreciated and understood. As someone who has always had unique interests, my parents embraced them and made me feel very valued. They still do. Making room for your child’s interests will cultivate curiosity in their lives…and yours!
