4 Tips to Cultivate a Business-Minded Homeschooler

Apr 03, 2026

Have you ever wondered how to create a successful homeschooler–one who is prepared for their career? It can feel overwhelming to start this process. How can we really do it? How can we create a homeschooler who has business sense and strong communication skills?

Recently, David and I spoke with Nick Mershon, who was a former homeschooler and Navy submarine veteran. In addition to being a father of eight homeschooled children, Mr. Mershon is a business expert and coach. He has worked with Grant Cardone and has become extremely successful in sales. He scales businesses from $2M to $20M+. He owns his own business called Hot Corner Consulting.

In our interview, he listed several ways to help your homeschooler learn business knowledge and communication skills.

  • Figure out your child’s learning style.
  • Use available resources.
  • Find a small business in your area.
  • Talk about their dreams.

The Business Plan

First off, observe your kiddo. What do they like? What are they good at? How do they learn? Do they learn best through listening or working with their hands? Do they enjoy writing and reading? Take time to watch them and learn about your child. This will help you figure out their learning style. Sit down with your homeschooler as well. Ask them personal questions to figure out how they learn.

Next, use available resources. In 2026, there are so many options and resources available for homeschooling families. Tutors, groups, and workbooks abound. Check out our podcast and Facebook group. Both of these options can help you navigate homeschooling. We’re always happy to assist you. Also, find content creators and homeschool experts who provide online advice. We recommend creators like Stephanie Cavin and Blake @ Homeschool Mastery Group.

Continuing, find a small business in your area. Your homeschooler can work for a local small business to gain work experience and life skills. Subsequently, they will also learn how to run a business. They may also discover their own passions or develop their own business dreams through this process.

Lastly, as they work for a business and discover their own interests, figure out what they want to do. Figure out their dreams for a business. Ask strong questions to unearth their dreams. Also, try to demonstrate good characteristics as a parent. Teach them how to be brave, honest, communicative, and kind. You can ask questions, such as:

  • “What do they do in their free time?”
  • “What is my example as a parent?”
  • “How can they start small by selling something?”
  • “What is their dream business?
  • “What do they want to build?”

Conclusion

In conclusion, Mr. Mershon provided solid advice when it comes to raising homeschoolers who can develop excellent business skills. These skills can help encourage and inspire homeschoolers. It can help them feel seen and confident as they navigate life. You can start today and show your homeschooler that they matter, as do their dreams. After all, homeschooling is truly about supporting the child so they can live a well-rounded, fulfilling life.
