4 Tips for Homeschoolers Interested in the Trades

May 22, 2026

Recently, I sat down with twin sisters, Crystal and Candice, who founded the Dental Assisting School of Indianapolis. They discussed their experience in the dental assisting program at a trade school. They also provided an in-depth look at the Dental Assisting School and the opportunities it offers.

Their school emphasizes an intentional setup where students learn in small classes. They also maintain a 1:5 instructor-to-student system, so each student gains experience and support. The 12-week program also gives students a hands-on, realistic environment where they can learn in a real dental office and practice digital scanning.

After graduation, the sisters also offer continued support, and the students can always come back to refresh their skills or ask questions.

Students interested in attending the school must be at least 17 years old. A high school diploma or GED is required for those who have already graduated.

  • Be the best of the best.
  • You don’t have to go to college.
  • Research and job shadow.
  • Think outside the box.

Finding Success

First off, work hard. Put in the work and study often. Have the mindset “I want to be the best of the best. I want to succeed and support myself.” For some people, setting goals can help them push through the hard days. Show up to class and be prepared. Ask for extra help if needed. The sisters encourage this method, and they love helping their students.

Next, if you don’t go to college, that doesn’t mean you won’t be successful. Success can and should look different for everyone. Don’t feel dumb or ashamed for not attending college. You can make a VERY successful life by going to a trade school!

Also, research your intended career. Figure out if this career is the right fit for you. Take time to job shadow and research more information online, using YouTube or trade school websites.

Don’t be afraid to think outside the box. If you want to learn more about dental assisting, but might not want to become an assistant, look into other areas of the field. Both sisters highly suggest this method. Research other jobs within that field that might be a bit different, such as admin work or insurance billing.

Conclusion

In conclusion, Candice and Crystal offered up excellent ways to prepare for a trade career. They clearly want to support students, and their words show it. Take time to do the research and put in the work. Create a steady study pace and find ways to work on your problem-solving skills. Also, find a goal and set it. Focus on that goal as you work hard through a trade program. At Nxt Era, we believe in you, and we know you can do great things in the trades!
