4 Steps to Grow in Communication as a Homeschool Family
Feb 18, 2026Have you ever wondered how to model good communication within your home? Or perhaps you’ve wondered how to teach good communication skills to your homeschoolers? Quite recently, David and I spoke with Dr. Bogaczyk, who is a communication expert and the founder of Mind for Life. Mind for Life is a brand that emphasizes the importance of effective communication and how we think.
In the interview, he defined key terms of communication.
Interpersonal communication = Communication with another person (relating with another person)
Intrapersonal communication = Communication with yourself
Good communication involves both disclosure and restraint. We build intimacy when we disclose private information in conversations.
He also shared several key points to cultivate good communication within the home. These practices provide actionable steps, so you can learn alongside your homeschooler.
- Allow your kids to grow on their own in communication situations.
- Teach self-awareness.
- Learn about communication.
- Encourage open-ended questions.
Communication 101
First, allow your kids to grow on their own in communication situations. If you notice a communication situation involving your child, let them solve it on their own. Encourage them to handle the situation with maturity. Loosen the reins, so to speak, and let them learn how to handle communication conflicts. This will help them with communication skills and also prepare them for adulthood.
Next, teach self-awareness in your home. Share with your children that oversharing isn’t proper. Teach them how to ask questions and nonverbally engage with others through eye contact and body language.
Continuing, learn about communication. Learn about communication as a family. Use communication courses, books, or podcasts to learn. You can use our communication interviews and experts to help you as well. Also, use communication situations to grow and learn as a communicator. Let life be a guide.
Finally, encourage open-ended questions. Ask open-ended questions and teach your children how to do the same. These open-ended questions can facilitate a fruitful conversation. You could even have a practice communication scenario at the dinner table to help your children learn about communication. Instruct them on how to share appropriately and ask open-ended questions.
Conclusion
In conclusion, Dr. Bogaczyk’s practices provide support to homeschooling families who want to learn more about communication. These actionable steps will help you grow and develop in our communication pillar. These tips will also grow your family in positive ways and may even restore balance in your family.
A homeschooling family that pursues effective communication is one that will positively impact the world.
