4 Steps to Designing a Successful Homeschool Plan
Feb 06, 2026Are you wondering how to start the homeschooling journey? How can you create a vision and a plan for your homeschooling journey? All the options can seem overwhelming and endless. Well, David and I sat down to chat with Blake Willard, who is a homeschool coach and the founder of the Homeschool Mastery Group. He shared incredible insights into the homeschooling experience, and I want to share a few of them with you today!
- Homeschool parents should experience the process to gain confidence.
- Homeschool parents should create an average plan.
- Homeschool parents should expect a honeymoon phase.
- Homeschool parents should set expectations.
Homeschooling 101
First of all, use the homeschool learning process to gain confidence and experience. Allow the journey to help you learn about yourself and your homeschooler. Make room for mistakes and hardships. Grow and learn from these mistakes. Offer yourself grace and remember, you’re learning along this new journey just like your homeschooler.
Next, build an average plan as a homeschool family. Through this average plan, you can create a homeschool design for your family. As you implement it, see what works and what doesn’t. Make edits and changes as needed. Take out schoolwork that causes more stress or remove boring work. Add in new ideas or curricula that support your family.
Continuing, expect a honeymoon phase. Expect it to flow smoothly and then shift. Allow room for meltdowns and emotional changes. These transitions are natural. Let the emotions and hardships come and work through them as a family unit.
Finally, set expectations. What do you want for your family? Where do you want to go as a family? What do you want to achieve? Sit down for a roundtable discussion as a family and figure out your vision for your homeschooling journey. What should your routine look like? What are your family’s homeschooling rules? Have an open discussion as a family to set expectations.
Conclusion
In conclusion, use Mr. Willard's tips to help you discover the wonders of homeschooling. Use these tips to achieve success and communicate openly as a family. His insights will cause you to grow as a homeschool family and set strong expectations. You can do this…together!
