4 Steps to Create an Innovative Homeschooler
Jan 28, 2026Have you wondered how to instill innovation in your homeschooler? How do you create a natural go-getter and problem-solver? Personally, I think homeschooling can often create innovation just through its purpose of alternative education. However, parents can still instill innovative qualities within their homeschooler through some simple steps.
- Encourage individual hobbies.
- Read together.
- Experience life as a family.
- Encourage problem-solving and goal-setting.
Step-by-Step
First of all, encourage individual hobbies. Encourage your homeschooler to seek out their own unique interests. Even if it seems “nerdy” or abnormal, as long as it doesn’t go against your family’s values, encourage them in their special area. Whether they like chess or taekwondo, encourage them in these areas.
Next, read together. I know I talk about reading together a lot, but it is important. Reading fosters creativity, critical thinking, and a love of knowledge. Therefore, learning via reading can inspire innovation. I’d specifically encourage reading together as a way to bond, but I’d also suggest having your homeschooler read alone. This fosters independence!
Continuing, experience life as a family. Go on field trips to historical sites, visit different areas to experience new cultures, and communicate with all types of people to grow in social adeptness.
Finally, encourage problem-solving and goal-setting in your homeschooler. Ask them to help you solve problems or support them as they solve problems in life. However, give your help when they need it. I’d suggest letting them solve their own problems as they get older and reach their teenage years.
Motivate your homeschooler to solve problems, set goals, and reach these goals. For instance, let’s say your community needs a new park bench. This is a problem that your homeschooler can solve. Through independence and innovation, they can learn how to build a new bench and donate it to your park. Perhaps they can even find someone to whom they can donate the bench. Through this problem, they can set goals and meet them through the project. The final “big” goal can be to donate the bench.
Also, they can find a completely different example of a problem to solve. Perhaps they need to solve a personal conflict or even enroll in college. These are all types of ways to create innovation.
Conclusion
In conclusion, you can become confident in building an innovative homeschooler. Remember to encourage individual hobbies, read together, experience life as a family, and encourage problem-solving and goal-setting. Together, as a family, you can pursue innovation and create a strong, goal-oriented homeschooler.
