4 Steps for Screen Time Boundaries

Jun 10, 2026

Let’s face it. A child’s screen time needs careful consideration. According to the AACAP, a child from ages 8-18 spends roughly 7.5 hours on a screen per day. As homeschooling families, we can be the change. We can help our children break free from the grip of screens.

  • Read A LOT.
  • Scale back on online games.
  • Watch movies as a family and wisely consume media.
  • Set a time limit on screens.

Set the Example

First, read a lot as a family. Show your child that reading can be a great alternative to screen time. There’s more to experience in life than just screen time. Show them that stories can fill their minds and cultivate strong characteristics in their hearts.

Next, scale back on online games. Sure, if your child loves gaming, I don’t suggest taking that away. However, find creative ways to scale back screen and gaming time. Replace it with something else that your homeschooler loves.

Continuing, make time for a movie night. Enjoy a fun movie as a family. Afterwards, discuss what you liked and disliked about the film. This actively creates participation and media analysis. Plus, it makes for fun memories!

Finally, set a time limit on screens. Put your phone away at a certain time before bed. You could put it away an hour before bedtime to help your mind slow down and relax. In addition, you set the example as the parent!

Conclusion

In conclusion, start screen time boundaries when your child is still young. This will help them cultivate strong boundaries in their adult lives as they navigate a digital-focused culture. Setting the example now will help your child make wise decisions in their future.
