4 Life Lessons from Homeschooling

Maybe you want to homeschool. However, doubts swirl in your mind. Your family and friends might not support this decision. When you bring up homeschooling, you find yourself met with questions and verbal attacks. Personally, I’ve been there. I was homeschooled from Kindergarten to graduation. My extended family didn’t support my parents’ decision to homeschool me. This was really hard, and I’m not going to sugarcoat it. 

There will be days when you feel like all you do is trudge up a hill. Some days, it will feel like everyone turns their back on you or hits you with question after question. Even as a young girl, I knew what my family thought. I could sense the suspicion and disbelief at our decision. My parents felt it too. Actually, we still do. 

However, looking back, I know the backlash and lack of support were worth it. Homeschooling taught me many things, and it gave me a firm foundation. It made our family unit stronger and my relationship with my parents even better. And isn’t that the whole point of homeschooling?

Homeschooling teaches us about strength. Because I felt set apart and different, I learned to find strength in my unique life structure. Homeschooling gave me confidence. Sure, I felt weird at times, but overall, homeschooling taught me how to see my differences as armor and power.

Homeschooling teaches us about hard lessons. From a young age, I learned that family won’t always support you. Sometimes you have to stand alone, and that’s okay. You can do it, and you are capable. I learned that not everyone will support my choices, and some will vehemently oppose them. It’s okay. I just have to believe in myself. 

Homeschooling teaches grit. Whether you struggle through a math lesson or face “socialization” questions from a random stranger, homeschooling teaches us to get back up every time. Again and again, you have to step up to the plate and swing. Homeschooling makes you repeat the same process until you solve the problem. Or in some cases, you have to repeat the same answer to people who question your choices. 

Homeschooling teaches us how to connect with our true selves. 

I learned how to dive deep into my interests. I love to read and have loved it from a young age. Sure, not many people my age read a lot, so it’s more of an uncommon interest. I learned to stand strong in my interests and find beauty in my unique traits. 

Also, homeschooling helped me connect with God. It allowed a deeper spiritual impact in my life because we used a Christian curriculum. I developed my faith from a young age because of homeschooling. 

Conclusion

Do you want this homeschooling experience for your kid(s)? Sure, it will take strength and grit. It will bring long days and suspicious glances. However, you’re not alone, and you can do this. My parents and I did it together. We survived and created a successful education experience for my life. If you choose homeschooling, you will learn much more than just how to teach math or Spanish. You will learn about life alongside your child.
