3 Ways Homeschool Moms Can Practice Self-Care
May 13, 2026Have you wondered how to care for yourself as a homeschool mom? Do you struggle with self-care and boundaries? As a busy homeschool mom, it feels impossible to find alone time or speak up for yourself amid chaos.
Well, I sat down with Dr. Allison Alford, who is the author and creator of Daughtering 101. She encourages adult daughters in their lives, so they can achieve emotional well-being and take care of themselves. She created the Daughtering 101 space so women have support in their relationships and roles as daughters. She focuses on pain points and the benefits of being in the adult daughter role.
Dr. Alford earned her Master’s degree and PhD from the University of Texas. Now, she serves as a clinical associate professor at Baylor University. Because of her work with Daughtering 101, she can certainly be called a researcher. On a personal note, she is a wife and mother.
During our insightful conversation, Dr. Alford recommended several ways homeschool moms (adult daughters) can care for themselves.
- View relationships as currency.
- Narrate your labor.
- Practice gratitude and protect your battery life.
$$$
First off, view relationships and communication as currency. Dr. Alford explained that talking is a large currency. What do you get from your relationships? How do they make you feel? Do they drain “your account” or fill it up? Dwell on this and take time to self-reflect.
Next, narrate your labor. Tell your parents, spouse, and/or friends what you do in a day. Talk about plans or how you work on emotions in your household. Dr. Alford suggests that moms should voice their activities, tasks, and plans to those around them. This gives light to the unseen work because much of it is mental.
Finally, practice gratitude and protect your battery life. Practice gratitude for your homeschool life. Say things to yourself like: “I am thankful for busy days because I get to stay home with my children. I choose this lifestyle, and I am thankful for it.”
Set boundaries as needed. If something feels like too much on your plate, it’s okay to say no. Set boundaries with those who bash your choice to homeschool. Make time in your schedule to spend time with other adults. These steps will help you care for yourself as a homeschool mom.
Conclusion
In conclusion, these steps can transform your life as a busy homeschool mom. They can help you become a successful adult daughter and pour healthy amounts of love into your relationships. Think about how you can begin applying these ideas in your life. Remember, your battery needs to be full so you can help your homeschoolers.
