3 Tips on Finding Balance as Homeschoolers
Apr 30, 2026Have you ever wondered how to achieve a balanced approach as a homeschool family? Maybe you want to strive for health goals or teach your children to become strong individuals.
Recently, I spoke with Pat Barber, who is a CrossFit athlete, homeschool dad, and adventure seeker. He is also a men's coach and mentors men through his program, “The Father’s Guild.” Additionally, he offers men’s retreats at his house. In earlier years, he was involved in CrossFit (started in 2004) and competed in the CrossFit Games, where he met his wife.
Continuing, he is a father to four sons, and they use the Ocean Grove Charter program. Their family unit also supports healthy living and outdoor play. The boys spend time outside, focusing on outdoor projects, especially since they live a low-tech lifestyle.
During the interview, he provided helpful information for parents who want to succeed in life and figure out the secret to balance for their family.
- Use the mindset shift practice and other tools.
- Set tech boundaries and live a low-tech lifestyle.
- Implement good character traits at home.
Nurture and Inspire!
To start, Mr. Barber recommended working on your mindset as a homeschool parent. Shift your mindset on different matters to achieve a positive mental state. Mr. Barber used the example of working out. Instead of working out to look good, focus on how it helps you become a better parent. Apply this framework to your entire life.
On a personal note, I tried something new, and it didn’t go as I had hoped. Instead of maintaining a negative mindset, I tried to see the positive in the situation. It was a struggle and not easy. It will definitely take practice as it does for me!
Also, use mental wellness tools, such as journaling, praying, or breathing. These steps will regulate your emotions and demonstrate to your children how to practice mental wellness. You can incorporate healthy nutritional habits and exercise.
Second, set tech boundaries and live a low-tech lifestyle. This will help the wellness of your entire family and improve emotional regulation. Set boundaries for yourself so your children can witness you implementing good habits. Discuss with your spouse or entire family how to design and stick to these boundaries.
Finally, implement good character traits at home. Show your child how you communicate well and work on emotional regulation. Use ethical character traits inside and outside the home. Prioritize showing your children that you love them unconditionally.
Additionally, encourage them to use a supreme sense of honesty. Let them explore the world with curiosity and inspire them to ask questions. All these habits will nurture children who are balanced, ready for the world, and strong.
Conclusion
Our world can challenge homeschoolers. Because of this, we must create a home environment where children feel safe, secure, and strong. We can be the example and lead our children so they’re battle-ready for life and open to the world around them. This will foster capable communicators and intelligent health-seekers. Education starts in the home, when homeschooling, so we must educate our children about wellness, so they’re ready for life.
