3 Tips from a Homeschool Mom and Author
Jun 26, 2026This week, David and I sat down with Tricia Goyer, a homeschooling mom and published author. She is a mom to 10 children (three are biological and seven are adopted). Throughout the interview, Ms. Goyer talked about her love of books, homeschooling journey, and author career. She provided both encouraging and interesting information for homeschoolers.
In addition, she also discussed her recent health journey. She has lost over 90 pounds through exercise, drinking water, cutting sugar, and eating more protein. Now she wants to help others regain healthy lifestyles, so she coaches people.
- Keep it simple. Focus on reading aloud, not the extra noise of homeschooling.
- Support your child’s needs and individualize attention.
- Make history come alive.
A Thriving Homeschooling Journey
First of all, Ms. Goyer explained that social media always shows us the highlights of homeschooling or the “extra” stuff. It can cause parents to fall into a comparison trap. Using examples from her own children, Ms. Goyer highlighted the importance of reading aloud together.
Her own children still recount stories from their younger years, and it has helped them with their writing. It also improved their ACT scores. In her homeschooling journey, she focused on core subjects and family fun.
Next, support your child’s needs. Some of Ms. Goyer’s children have learning disabilities. She supported her children with their needs and sought resources, such as speech and eye therapy, to help. In her case, some of their therapy was covered by insurance via a pediatrician’s prescription.
For parents who have children with disabilities, you can look into this and see if it’s an option for your family. Also, seek individual learning time with your children. Ms. Goyer tried to spend at least 10 minutes of one-on-one time with her children to help their learning.
Also, feel free to adapt learning to their needs. For instance, with her one child who struggled with writing, she transcribed essays, and her child spoke the content to her.
Lastly, bring history to life for your homeschoolers. Visit historical sites and encourage historical fiction. These methods can engage your homeschooler in history and show the heroes, tales, and feats behind historical events. In her writing journey, she focused on historical events as the central storyline for her stories and even co-wrote a historically inspired series with her son.
Conclusion
In conclusion, Ms. Goyer’s words show her love for her children. They also show her care for homeschool parents. These tips can help your homeschooling journey thrive and spark curiosity within your children. Also, support their learning needs and individualize learning to their specific needs. After all, homeschooling is designed to uplift the child and carry them along their educational journey.
