3 Tips for Protecting (Not Sheltering) Our Homeschoolers

As homeschoolers, we’re often accused of sheltering our children. How do we avoid sheltering our children but still protect them? These days, we have to be on alert to keep our children safe and innocent. Personally, I’m glad my parents preserved my innocence for as long as possible. I didn’t become desensitized to issues and used critical thinking when I was ready to grasp difficult concepts. 

In 2026, how do we protect our children without sheltering them?

• Remain mindful of children’s media and content. 
• Have open, age-appropriate discussions.
• Use hard situations as learning lessons.

Make Lemonade

First of all, especially when your children are young, be aware of children’s media and content. What content are they watching or reading? Does it have hidden agendas or disturbing messages? Stay on alert. If you think they’re old enough, discuss the content. 

Along the same idea, have open, age-appropriate discussions with your children. My parents and I had many discussions about life situations, content in books/media, and politics. We really didn’t leave much off the table. This helped me learn communication and critical thinking skills. Plus, after having these conversations, I learned how to handle myself in more serious situations. Now, as an adult, I know right from wrong because of these open discussions. 

Lastly, use hard situations as learning lessons. This can be a challenge for both you and your homeschooler. It’s a hard lesson for everyone involved. But when life gives us lemons, we can try our best to make lemonade. 

Conclusion

In conclusion, we can take these steps to protect our homeschoolers, but not to shelter them. We can stay alert as parents, but use hard lessons as opportunities to talk openly with our children. Remember, when life gives us lemons, we can try our best to make lemonade.
