3 Steps to Developing Well-rounded, Life-skilled Homeschoolers
Jul 15, 2026What is one of the main differences between public schooling and homeschooling? Well, homeschooling incorporates life skills, whereas public school graduates often claim they feel unprepared for life after graduation. Homeschooling prepares students for the real world. Public schooling prepares students for the workforce. This can be a great thing. However, when we focus on developing workers, this limits a child’s view. We need to cultivate thinkers and learners. This creates a well-rounded view for life.
How do we cultivate students who are prepared for both the workforce and life? Well, keep reading for tips on developing well-rounded homeschoolers.
- Learn through real-life experiences.
- Communicate with all ages.
- Practice hands-on skills.
Lovin’ Real Life Again
First off, teach your homeschooler how to learn through real-life experiences. You can teach them to learn from struggles and failures, instead of breaking down from shame. Teach them how to get up and move forward in life with grit. Get out in the world regularly, so they learn how to navigate the grocery store and the DMV.
Along the same idea, communicate with all ages. Show your child how you talk to all ages and groups. This shows effective communication and teaches your children how to communicate well from real-world experience. Show them how you listen and respond with care and intention.
Lastly, practice hands-on skills. Teach your child how to unload the dishwasher and clean up the kitchen. Show them how to cook a meal. Let them wash the car or clean their room. Although simple, these skills teach our children how to handle real-life tasks.
