3 Steps to Develop Communication Skills and Focus on Others
Apr 22, 2026Recently, Nxt Era spoke with Tony Martignetti, who is a podcast host, communication expert, and former stand-up comedian. He shared many insights on communication and comedic skills. His podcast focuses on nonprofits and how listeners can grow their nonprofits. He also served in the Air Force and attended college, where he grew in his communication skills.
- Become an active listener.
- Practice your words and listen to yourself to gain comedic skills.
- Build relationships with others and develop communication skills in real-life settings.
Intro to Communication
First, become an active listener. Now more than ever, we need people who listen. Effective listeners must focus on the other person and set their self-interests aside in a conversation. Mr. Martignetti recommended meeting with others over a meal. This creates a shared space. A good listener should ask personal, open-ended questions in communication. He also recommends digging deep for details and taking the focus off you. You can share personal information, but don’t take over the conversation.
Second, Mr. Martignetti suggested several tips on becoming a good comedian. He explained that new comedians should focus on material that they find funny. You could focus on your family, romantic relationships, or hobbies (these are just examples). In addition, listen to yourself and listen to other comedians. Study how you speak and learn from other comedians to improve your style.
Finally, build relationships with others. Also, develop communication skills in real-life settings. Work on your communication skills as you go through life. Develop your listening skills and learn how to focus on others. In addition, as the homeschool parent, test your child’s interests and see how they can learn communication in other arenas. For instance, would they enjoy acting in a play or speaking on a debate team? Enroll them in an activity to learn communication skills. Figure out where your homeschooler learns best.
Conclusion
In conclusion, Mr. Martignetti brought a wonderful presence to the interview. He communicated well and supplied many communication tips. These tips show us that communication is a lifelong process, and we can always learn. Support your homeschooler as they learn communication and develop their skills.
