3 Basic Tips to Help Your Homeschooler Learn Life Skills
Jun 19, 2026Let’s face it. The public school system leaves our children without many life skills. So as not to make a hasty generalization, I’m sure some students leave the system with life skills. However, mainly, most students head into adulthood without life skills in their back pocket.
How can we help the next generation learn life skills? Well, homeschooling gives you and your children more time. In fact, you’ll have more time and opportunity to teach life skills.
At Nxt Era, we first suggest homeschooling. Then teaching life skills will naturally come into play. How do we teach life skills?
- Start small.
- Encourage basic academic skills.
- Let them problem-solve independently.
Cover the Basics
Start small at first. Start small with basic skills and teach them from a young age. For example, from a young age, I learned how to make my own bed and clean my own laundry. These basic skills helped me transition into an adult because they have been a solid part of my routine. You can start by teaching your child how to make their bed or even simply tidy their room.
Next, encourage basic academic skills. Teach your child how to read and work on math problems. Reading naturally develops problem-solving and critical thinking skills. Reading raises emotional intelligence, which we can see that, unfortunately, many people lack in 2026. In addition, solving math problems helps children logically work through situations.
Lastly, let your child problem-solve independently (as long as it’s safe). Although my parents helped and supported me during my childhood, they would often ask me, “How do you think you should do this?” As annoying as that question could be, eventually, this problem-solving process helped me. Now, as an adult, I can solve problems or prevent problems because I can think ahead.
Conclusion
In conclusion, teaching your child life skills prepares them for survival. It builds confidence and critical thinking skills. Gear your child up with problem-solving skills and the ability to think for themself. This will lead to a strong and skilled future!
