2 Steps to Unlocking Your Homeschooler’s Love of Learning

Dec 03, 2025

Recently, I spoke with Michelle Rodriguez, who is a first-generation homeschool mom and is in her fourth year of homeschooling her children. She is also the creator behind the brand Rooted and Thriving Mama, which is a faith-based stationery brand. In our interview, we discussed the importance of individualized learning. She explained that homeschooling helps a student develop their individual learning style.

Well, what does this mean for you, the homeschooling parent? Unlocking your child’s learning style can change everything! Just to refresh your mind, here are the seven learning styles:

  • Introverted/solitary learner
  • Visual learner
  • Auditory learner
  • Kinesthetic learner
  • Reading/writing learner
  • Social/interpersonal learner
  • Logical learner

For full information, we highly recommend reading our Learning Styles resource and blog post. If you discover your child’s learning style, this will help the learning process because you will know how to teach them in a way that fosters understanding.

Step #1: Observe

Well, how do you figure out how your child learns? It’s fairly simple. Observe them. See what they like and what gives them energy. See what they don’t like and what drains them. For instance, I am a solitary learner/reading learner. I thrive on learning by myself, especially through books and writing papers. If you gave me math problems to solve in a crowded room, I would quickly become very drained and upset.

Therefore, watch your child. Pay attention to their cues. They’ll show them off because they are kids, and kids love expressing themselves.

Step #2: Practice Patience

Now, let’s say that you’ve discovered your child’s learning style, but you’re upset. Maybe they learn differently from you, or you feel that their learning style seems abnormal. Well, try to shrug off that belief. Remember that you are a homeschool parent. Homeschooling brings freedom and individualized learning. You can adapt the structure to your child’s needs. This will create a love of learning and foster a desire to continue learning. Both of these traits will help your child in the real world.

Conclusion

Let go of perceptions and socially acceptable norms. Stand firm in the beauty of individualized homeschooling. Let your child learn in freedom. Discover their learning style and unlock a new world of learning. Watch as your child finds joy in learning and homeschooling. Observe your child and practice patience. You might just find that you love learning right along with your homeschooler!
